In August, the team participated in the EV Rally of Scotland, showcasing the charging infrastructure in Scotland. Covering 600 miles over 2 days, the dynamic route spanned from the Arnold Clark Innovation Centre in Glasgow to the stunning Highland Hotel Resort in Aviemore, demonstrating the capability of EVs and the robustness of the charging infrastructure across Scotland.
The journey commenced at the Arnold Clark Innovation Centre, setting the stage for an exhilarating adventure through the heart of Scotland. With a selection of vans and cars, the team set off on the rally in the EV Camper, ready to head to checkpoint 2. The participants were prepared to embark on a road trip that would not only test the endurance of the electric vehicles but also highlight the efficiency of the charging network.
Checkpoint 1: Falkirk Stadium Charging Hub
The first checkpoint was the Falkirk Stadium Charging Hub, a beacon of sustainability in the heart of Falkirk. With the capacity to charge an impressive 26 electric vehicles simultaneously, this hub ensured that every participant had ample opportunity to recharge and refresh. Conveniently located just off junction 6 on the M9 motorway, it also provided an excellent starting point for those exploring the Kelpies and Helix Park.
Checkpoint 2: Clepington Road, Dundee
After a revitalising charge at Falkirk, the participants pressed on to Checkpoint 2 – the Clepington Road Charging Hub in Dundee. This strategically located hub ensured that the vehicles were fully charged and ready for the next leg of the journey. Read more about the hub here.
Checkpoint 3: Scenic Stop in Braemar
Nestled amidst the breathtaking landscapes of the Cairngorms National Park, Braemar provided a picturesque backdrop for the third checkpoint. The participants took a moment to recharge both ourselves and our vehicle, immersing in the natural beauty before setting off for the next charging destination.
This little village was a tourist hotspot and makes a great stop for charging your electric vehicle, with local toilet facilities in the car park and multiple local shops nearby, passing time here is not an issue.
Checkpoint 4: Altens Lorry Park
A well-deserved break awaited us at Altens Lorry Park, the fourth checkpoint. Here, we enjoyed a cup of coffee and a delicious cake, reenergising for the final stretch to Aviemore. The Altens Lorry Park charging facility ensured that the vehicles were not only charged but also ready to conquer the remaining miles.
Checkpoint 5: Highland Hotel Resort, Aviemore
As the sun began to set, the journey reached its climax at the Highland Hotel Resort in Aviemore. Checkpoint 5 marked the triumphant conclusion of an incredible day, celebrating the endurance of the electric vehicles and the strength of Scotland’s charging infrastructure.
Checkpoint 1: Inverness Caledonia Thistle Stadium
The first stop on Day 2 led us to the Inverness Caledonia Thistle Stadium, where we had the opportunity to recharge and take in the vibrant atmosphere of Inverness. This checkpoint not only offered a chance to replenish energy but also showcased the evolving charging infrastructure in urban settings.
Checkpoint 2: Port of Cromarty Firth
Continuing on our journey, we made their way to the Port of Cromarty Firth, a picturesque checkpoint that provided a stunning backdrop for recharging their vehicles. The participants took a moment to soak in the coastal beauty before hitting the road once more.
Checkpoint 3: River Ness Hydro Project
The River Ness Hydro Project served as a fitting reminder of Scotland’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions. This checkpoint highlighted the integration of renewable energy sources and further emphasised the harmony between electric vehicles and the environment.
Checkpoint 4: Loch Ness – A Scenic Interlude
No journey through Scotland would be complete without a stop at the iconic Loch Ness. We took a moment to savour fish and chips by the tranquil waters, taking in the rich history and folklore of the area. This picturesque setting also provided the final opportunity to charge before reaching their destination.
Checkpoint 5: Riverside Museum, Glasgow – Journey’s End
As the sun began to set, we arrived at the final destination, the Riverside Museum in Glasgow. The museum’s stunning architecture and riverside location provided a fitting backdrop for the conclusion of their incredible journey. We were greeted with a sense of accomplishment, having covered the distance from Aviemore to Glasgow entirely on electric power on day 2.
